Referred by SDAS (SMART Centre)?

Here's What Happens Next

SDAS (SMART Centre)

SDAS (SMART Centre) is based in Edinburgh at the Astley Ainslie Hospital. An assessment here would usually be from a medical referral (but not always) as they are part of the NHS. It is also likely that this prior to any license revocation, therefore there are less restrictions on driving (no L plates required).

Help from The Wee Red Car

If you have been referred by the SMART Centre, once they have completed their assessment they will often recommend a local to you driving instructor that can provide you with further training. This is most useful if you have been away from driving for an extended period of time or have been advised to drive using a different control method (push/pull hand controls etc).

You may be going for an assessment due to feeling less confident in your reactions or abilities behind the wheel, the SMART Centre would check you capabilities both physical and mental to check that you are safe to drive. As above they may recommend some lessons with an instructor to help build your confidence in various traffic conditions, with some sepcific recommendations as to what will help, especially if you need to return to complete a longer assessment on busier roads.

Adaptations Available

My car can be setup for hand controls (no or limited foot control) with Push/Pull for accelerator and brake, this control has a pin switch to control the indicators as it needs to be used with a plain steering ball. If other ancillary controls cannot be used in this configuration then a steering controller can replace the steering ball which has buttons to control other accessories in the car (wipers/lights/horn/indicators). If there is a loss of use of the right leg then a left foot accelerator can be used to control the car. Full list here of what is available with The Wee Red Car.

I have complete all the training courses from Disability Driving Instructors in the use and teaching with these adaptations.
