DriveAbility Scotland
DriveAbility Scotland is based in Glasgow and part of the Driving Mobility network. They have outreach centres in Westhill, Aberdeen and will soon have one in Inverness.
Help from The Wee Red Car
If you have been referred or self referred to DriveAbility Scotland, once they have completed their assessment they will often recommend a local to you driving instructor that can provide you with further training. This is most useful if you have been away from driving for an extended period of time or have been advised to drive using a different control method (push/pull hand controls etc).
PDAL or self referral
If you have had your license revoked for a medical reason and need or want to return to driving the DVLA will often issue a PDAL (Provisional Disability Assessment License). This is time restricted license with similar requirements as that of a learner provisional license (must display L plates and often requires the fitting of dual controls). It is time bound that it lasts for only 3 months to allow retraining and/or familiarisation of new controls. It will expire on completion of the formal assessment at DriveAbility Scotland. A report will be sent to DVLA who will, if deemed appropriate, re-issue your license potentially with special codes to reflect the special equipment now required to allow you to safely drive.
If you have self referred, this would usually be due to feeling less confident in your reactions or abilities behind the wheel, DriveAbility Scotland would check you capabilities both physical and mental to check that you are safe to drive. As above they may recommend some lessons with an instructor to help build your confidence in various traffic conditions.
Adaptations Available
My car can be setup for hand controls (no or limited foot control) with Push/Pull for accelerator and brake, this control has a pin switch to control the indicators as it needs to be used with a plain steering ball. If other ancillary controls cannot be used in this configuration then a steering controller can replace the steering ball which has buttons to control other accessories in the car (wipers/lights/horn/indicators). If there is a loss of use of the right leg then a left foot accelerator can be used to control the car. Full list here of what is available with The Wee Red Car.
